Why Is It Required That I Submit My Site To A Search Engine?

Monday, March 29th, 2010

The Internet is a vast and amazing place, filled with literally an infinite number of websites and opportunities. The rapid availability of Internet access and inexpensive hosting services allow anyone with basic knowledge of HTML to create a website devoted to any topic they choose. Maybe it’s a fan page for their favorite TV star, maybe it’s a blog dedicated to their musings on cats, maybe it’s a web page for their small business, the point is that the internet allows almost anyone to say almost anything to almost anyone.

The problem is that the internet is so huge, with so many websites on so many subjects that it is difficult for anyone to find a specific website without a lot of technological help. Currently, this is done by search engines such as Google, Bing or Yahoo. These companies send out what are called “Spiders” to constantly crawl the World Wide Web looking for websites. The means by which they find websites and determine their importance is highly proprietary, but in general they do so by examining links and trying to find out what goes where, how often, and in what way. This is often done by seeing what pages are the most linked to in reference to the relevant key words. Without search engines, it would be impossible for anyone to find anything at all on the internet, all thanks to the fact that there is too much internet for any single person to comb through.

This is why it is essential that all websites submit themselves to search engines. By registering with a search engine, it ensures that they can be found, and that search engines know what the site is about and why people should go there. Without this basic information, it is common for web sites to be improperly referenced, and consequently passed over by most web users. When a web site isn’t relevant, it is usually ignored, and web content that is ignored quickly disappears under a mountain of new, more relevant sites. Website submission is so important to the success of a site that many hosting services offer the basics of the search engine submission as part of the purchase package. Of course it is still on the onus of the buyer to opt in to the service and fill out the necessary forms.

Many companies also offer what is known as a search engine submission service, in that they will examine a website and see that it is sent to appropriate search engines in order to make sure they are found when someone feeds keywords into the search bar. While unnecessary for, say, a person’s personal blog, such a leg-up in the web site submission process is often ideal for small businesses, especially those who do not have a lot of expertise in the more technical aspects of the web. These services are generally inexpensive and may offer programs to allow the listing to be updated periodically so as to reflect the changing nature of the business. This is ideal for a company whose products and services change regularly, such as a restaurant, as it allows them to keep their website relevant while focusing on the true core of their business. Search engine submission services are also often packaged with search engine optimization services, in order to ensure that search engines rank the web page highly.
